Later this 2007 MLS season, David Beckham, 32, will leave Real Madrid and officially join the LA Galaxy and being playing.
Beckham is shattering the currently MLS pay scale. According to the MLS Player’s Union, he will receive $6.5 million in guaranteed compensation this season.
That shatters the MLS average, which is under $100,000 annually. The MLS now has four big-pay players. The next closest to Beckham is Chicago Fire Forward Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who is making just over $2.6 million this season.
The big question is: will Beckham sell enough tickets? Better yet, will he bring new American fans to the sport?
The LA Galaxy already has good attendance, a new stadium and profit. The Galaxy led the MLS in attendance—24,204 per game last season. According to the Galaxy’s official site, they were at 89.6% of capacity last season.
So, the Beckham needs to draw tickets in places like Chicago, Salt Lake and Colorado.
Will it happen? We’ll know soon enough.
